COLUMBIA, S.C. The Eye Center, P.A. is proud to highlight the contributions of Dr. Ryan Mercer, a cornea and refractive surgery specialist whose commitment to surgical innovation is setting new benchmarks in ophthalmic care. Dr. Mercers recent international recognition at the 2026 ASCRS (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) Film Festival serves as a testament to his dedication to advancing the field of vision care.

Dr. Mercer, a Columbia native, has distinguished himself through his mastery of complex eye conditions and his ability to translate cutting-edge research into effective, patient-centered treatments. His work, which earned runner-up honors at the 2026 ASCRS Film Festival in the "New Surgical Techniques" category, underscores his role as a leader in developing strategies that prioritize both precision and patient outcomes.

In the rapidly evolving field of ophthalmology, the ability to translate new research into practical, life-changing procedures is what defines an innovator, says Dr. Mercer. My goal has always been to apply advanced surgical strategies that provide safer, more predictable results for my patients, whether they are undergoing cataract surgery, refractive lens procedures, or complex corneal interventions.

Dr. Mercers clinical expertise spans a wide range of advanced procedures, including:
Advanced Cataract and Refractive Lens Surgery: Utilizing state-of-the-art technology to tailor lens options to the unique visual goals of each patient.
Corneal Transplantation and Reconstruction: Specializing in complex corneal conditions, including keratoconus, through modern techniques such as CTAK, CAIRS, and corneal cross-linking.
Laser Vision Correction: Providing high-precision care for patients seeking freedom from glasses and contact lenses.
Advanced Surgical Management: Bringing expertise in specialized techniques, such as the Yamane technique for aphakia, to address challenging ocular conditions.

A graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, where he also completed his Cornea and Refractive Surgery Fellowship, Dr. Mercer combines academic rigor with a compassionate, individualized approach to patient care. His surgical philosophy is built on the belief that every patient deserves a treatment plan as unique as their own eyes.

We are honored to have a surgeon of Dr. Mercers caliber at The Eye Center, says Dr. Matthew Clary. His recognition on the international stage is not just an award for a specific technique; it is a reflection of the high standard of care he brings to our patients every single day in Columbia.

The Eye Center Offers Advanced, Comprehensive Treatment Options for Patients Diagnosed with Glaucoma

Dr. Matthew Clary — Sun, 23 Aug 2026 20:00:00 Z

Leading South Carolina ophthalmology practice highlights modern therapiesincluding SLT laser, iStent, and DURYSTAdesigned to protect vision and reduce reliance on daily eye drops.

COLUMBIA, S.C. Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it develops slowly and typically presents no early warning signs or pain. By the time a patient notices changes in their vision, permanent damage to the optic nerve may have already occurred. For the millions of Americans living with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, early detection and consistent management of intraocular pressure (IOP) are vital to preventing vision loss.

To help patients navigate this chronic condition, The Eye Center offers a comprehensive range of advanced diagnostic technologies and state-of-the-art treatment options. Moving far beyond traditional eye drops alone, modern glaucoma care at The Eye Center focuses on personalized therapies tailored to each patient's clinical needs and lifestyle.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Eye Drops
While daily prescription eye drops are traditionally the first line of defense, many patients struggle with strict administration schedules, physical dexterity hurdles, or ocular surface irritation. To combat these challenges, The Eye Center provides cutting-edge alternatives that optimize pressure control while improving patient quality of life:

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): A quick, virtually painless 3-to-5-minute in-office laser procedure that stimulates the eye's natural drainage system to lower intraocular pressure. SLT can be used as a primary therapy or alongside drops, offering relief that can last for years and be repeated if necessary.
iStent® Micro-Invasive Surgery: Recognized as the smallest medical device approved by the FDA, the iStent is a microscopic titanium device implanted to create a permanent bypass in the eye's blocked drainage pathway. Frequently placed during cataract surgery, it helps restore natural fluid outflow without requiring extra recovery time.
DURYSTA Sustained-Release Implant: Designed for patients seeking an alternative to daily drops, DURYSTA is an innovative, biodegradable implant placed inside the front chamber of the eye. It continuously dispenses medication to control eye pressure over several months before dissolving naturally.

Comprehensive Care Close to Home
As a premier full-service eye care and refractive practice in South Carolina, The Eye Center combines advanced technology with experienced medical professionals to deliver individualized glaucoma management plans. Whether a patient requires routine diagnostic monitoring, laser therapy, or surgical intervention, the dedicated team is equipped to preserve long-term ocular health.

"Glaucoma requires proactive management, but patients no longer have to rely solely on daily eye drops to protect their sight," said the clinical team at The Eye Center. "By offering advanced options like SLT, iStent, and DURYSTA, we can customize care to fit each individual's unique lifestyle and medical needs."

Patients diagnosed with glaucomaor those seeking a second opinion regarding their current eye pressure managementare encouraged to schedule a consultation.

In the picturesque city of Charlotte, NC, trees adorn our landscapes, providing shade, beauty, and a connection to nature. However, when trees are removed, they often leave behind stubborn reminders in the form of unsightly stumps. While some homeowners may consider tackling stump removal as a DIY project, opting for professional stump removal services offers numerous advantages. In this article, we'll delve into why professional tree stump removal Charlotte is the best choice for property owners in Charlotte, NC, and uncover the benefits it provides.

This thorough approach ensures that the entire stump and root system are removed, preventing any regrowth and leaving behind a smooth and level surface.

2. Minimizes Damage to Property: Attempting to remove a stump on your own can often result in damage to surrounding property, such as landscaping, utilities, or structures. Professional stump removal Charlotte, on the other hand, are conducted with precision and care to minimize any potential damage to your property. Arborists are trained to assess the site and use appropriate techniques to safely remove stumps without causing harm to nearby features, ensuring that your property remains intact and undamaged.

4. Cost-Effective Solution: While some homeowners may be tempted to tackle stump removal themselves to save money, the cost of renting equipment, purchasing supplies, and potential damage to property can quickly add up. Professional stump removal services offer a cost-effective solution by providing all the necessary equipment, expertise, and labor for a fixed price. When you consider the time, effort, and potential risks involved in DIY stump removal, hiring a professional arborist often proves to be a more economical choice in the long run.

5. Ensures Safety: Stump removal can be hazardous, particularly for those without the proper training or equipment. DIY attempts to remove stumps may result in accidents or injuries, posing risks to both individuals and property. Professional stump removal services prioritize safety above all else, employing trained arborists who adhere to strict safety protocols and use appropriate safety gear. By entrusting stump removal to professionals, you can rest assured that the job will be completed safely and efficiently, minimizing any risks to yourself or others.
